Abstract
A greenhouse experiment was conducted at the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), University of the Philippines at Los Baños to : (a) determine any differential response of the selected genotypes to soil acidity; (b) further evaluate and compare to promising acid tolerant genotypes under three (3) levels of soil acidity; and (c) compare performance of parents and their hybrids under acidic environment. the genotypes were evaluated in a split-plot design with the three (3) soil acid levels : 4.8, 5.5 and 6.1 pH as subplot.
Root dry weight, leaf area, plant height, and total dry matter were affected by genotypes. Variations were found significant among hybrids and likewise, between parents and hybrids.
Genotypes(G) x acid(A) interaction significantly affected root dry weight, leaf area, root-shoot ratio, and total dry matter. Hybrids (H) exhibited significant variations as affected by acid levels. This was also found for root dry weight, leaf area, and root-shoot ratio. While parents(P) x acid (A) interaction dry matter only.
The genotypes, P3, P5, P13, P14, P16, P17, X25, X37, X46 and X67 were found to be tolerant to acidic soils. Intolerant genotypes were: P4, P6, P7, X12, X23, X24, X36, X46, X56, and X57. Genotypes with intermediate tolerance are P1, X15, X35, and X47
