Issue Date

Abstract
The study aimed to improve the agricultural productivity and farm income of farmers through sustainable and environment-friendly practices. It was conducted in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Abra from WS 2008 to WS 2009. It involved the farmer partners (FPs) who implemented all the technologies advocated at the technology demonstration farms (TDFs), and the participating farmers (PFs) who choose a combination of the recommended technologies in their farmers' learning fields (FLFs). Establishment of TDFs and FLFs, weekly farmers' field school, technology cross visits and field day were the project components. PhilRice spearheaded the project implementation for two seasons, thereafter, the LGU expanded the project strategies to other barangays. After two seasons, farmers increased their knowledge on the use of improved rice varieties and organic fertilizers, cultural management practices, integrated fertilizer, water and pest management. The farmers' became conscious about the hazards of chemical pesticides. They have developed their leadership capability as their fellow farmers see them as models. The farmers increased their family income, paid some of their debts, purchased majority of their farm inputs, and strengthened their family ties. The village-level IPM was able to promote convergence, unity and partnership among extension programs of the DA and the private sector.
