Abstract
This professorial lecture premised its hypothesis that the so-called "School for the Future" will be designed to address the needs of the third world communities as one vehicle in meeting education and development needs using resources in the community. First, the paper attempted to discuss the need to reconceptualize the traditional concept of community education transforming it as a dynamic field of study where best practices and innovations can be applied for sustainable development.
Secondly, the paper analyzed the implications of some new learning modalities such as the Theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardener and the Zone of Proximal development by Vygotsky in helping improve learning styles and thinking of students within the context of the ambivalent desire of preserving the best in community culture and in promoting modernity in the new century. This emerging paradigm shift as shown in the heuristic model for community education in the future, will be enhanced through the use of community based participatory planning (CBPP) approach as experienced in some development projects in the Philippines.
Finally, the concept of Social Sustainability has been described in which definitely, community education runs parallel to its intention. This means that through community education, the desire of any development strategy to become sustainable is made through people's participation in many social decisions. Experience points out that without the participatory involvement of people, sustainable development will rarely take place.
